상경/Sanggyeong
Personal project

Last winter I finally got to read Katsuhiro Otomo’s manga classic Akira after ten years of religiously watching the animated movie. Inspired by his ability to draw full-scale human apocalypse, I wanted to create an animation that captures the dynamic city environment that is very present in Far East Asia.
상경/Sanggyeong means, quote: ”An act of going to the capital, Seoul, from local provinces.”. 상경 is used in Korean daily live to describe the ever growing urban behemoth that is Seoul with its 25 million inhabitants.
I took inspiration from the last chapter in which there are a lot of landscape drawings portraying a ruined NEO-Tokyo. My version, however, isn’t that of civilization ending; but I make the city dance like there is no return!
