At first glance, those familiar with After Effects are probably guessing amount of layers required to create an image like this. The first person to guess the right number of layers wins a Starbucks coupon worth of overpriced coffee ☕︎

As seen in the example above, the preparation-file for animating focusses on getting the cubes in the right order so as to have more freedom in the process for animating later.

The difficulty with this type of animation is keeping track of the cubes’ position when they move. Another challenging element is that the cubes can’t touch one another, so timing is key. The example above shows the cube grid moving before being placed repeatedly across the composition in the final stage.
