Artist Introduction

I wanted to create a short animation that introduces me as an artist. I used my initials as a visual starting point and imposed the following limitations:

  1. Simple design
  2. Only one weekend to finish
  3. Use a technique that I haven’t applied before

The first two points were by far the most challenging because I have a tendency to spend too much time on endless details.
Growing up in the Netherlands, I would see a version of my initials carved in trees a lot. It’s known as the butterfly: mirror the B’s and use the ”v” as an anchor to connect the two B’s. I didn’t feel like using this because I wanted the letters to read from left to right (BvB).

Being proficient in the Isometric perspective style, I converted the B’s into cubes and placed the ”v” on top. Animating the inner shapes of the B letters was easy, but applying the noise/grain filters was new to me. The latter is a style choice because I wanted to create a Mc Escher-like aesthetic.
I resorted to Ben Marriot, the Grain-Master himself, for guidance regarding this new technique and am pleased with the result. This little project definitely inspired me to do more with grain/noise effects in the future.
